WakeOnLan is a symbian mobile phone application that lets you switch on your computer remotely by sending a so called magic over a virtually created lan. However this concept is quite old but it was followed over lan where it was required to power on a computer by another computer connected via a LAN but with this application you can do the same from your mobile phone also.
The principle of working still remains the same where the sender needs to send a magic packet to the destination terminal to be powered on. What exactly is this magic packet, for those who are a little more on the technical side, magic packet contains a 6 byte stream of ones which when converted to hex values gives FF FF FF FF FF FF. After this stream is attached the mac address of the destination computer. This frame is broadcast and whichever mac address is matched that terminal is powered on since mac address are unique.
Coming back to the mobile phone counterpart of this technology which works by sending the packet OTA through a wi-fi network to a computer connected to an ethernet wired network. You just need to press the icon and the frame will be send automatically and the machine will be powered on. After a few seconds Wakeonlan will quite automatically.
Configure the application is quite simple where you need to enter the mac address of thedestination computer along with the broadcast ip of the network. Getting too much technical, is it? But you will have to figure out these two to use this; it isn’t as difficult as it seems to be. However there are few limitation also which include that you can only configure a single computer to be controlled via this application. Moreover you need to be in the local area network to use it.
